With prom season just around the corner I am starting to see some trends happening on my Pinterest boards. The biggest prom  theme trend is the 1920s theme. No doubt inspired by the Great Gatsby movie, this year’s new selection of prom dresses have beading and sequins in party worthy colors. Popular 1920s prom dresses are not the  authentic 20s style dresses I usually feature on VintageDancer, instead they are brighter, more dramatic, sexier, and classic prom gowns. They are the perfect mix of contemporary taste and a 1920s sense of formal glamour.

This stunning all peachy gown by Mac Duggal had an explosion of sequins and rhinestones all over the bodice and cascading  down the skirt. It is a dress that would fit perfectly into one of Great Gatsby’s parties. I would wear this in a heartbeat and so would most Pinners.

Lace dresses have been the talk of the town this year. Mixing lace, chiffon, tulle, and some bling brings an “old” materiel to life again. Lace 1920s prom dresses are classy and sophisticated. They also can be more affordable than an all beaded gown.  The little bits of sparkle on this lace mermaid gown is all it needs for a Great Gatsby prom theme. $302

The best sparkle of all has to be diamonds, right? Well that would be an priceless gown but a silver bead or sequin gown has all the sparkle of diamonds at a more affordable price tag.  This Faviana gown is stunning and very much in the 1920’s style. $398.

A white dress doesn’t have to mean it is a wedding dress. With sparkle and a hint of Art Deco design white dresses have found a new place in 2014 proms. Just search Pinterest for prom dresses  and you will see the most loved dresses are all white, off white, silver or other light colors.  White is the new black!  While many prom goers don’t want to wear a 20’s costume, when dressed up with the right accessories this Flapper dress can look 21st century gorgeous. $282

Flappers were know for causing media scandal when they dressed in “short” dresses in the 1920’s. Short dresses today would have been obseen in the 20’s. Luckily they are on trend and just as glamorus as long prom gowns. This sexy little prom dress has a stunning sequin design. Made by Mignon, my favorite formal dress designer. $498

The Sweetheart strapless dress has been and will probably always be a classic formal dress. Classics can be updated and in this case with a beaded bodice for a dash of Great Gatsby prom inspiration. It has just enough sparkle to fit the 20’s theme and with a full skirt that flatters all body types. You can’t go wrong with a prom classic! $216

White there are plenty of colorful 1920’s style prom dresses available I still see the trend for everyone’s favorite formal color: black.  Coco Chanel, top designer in the 1920’s, is given credit for first making a simple black dress the new trendy style to wear. Black velvet, silk satin and chiffon were the most common evening fabrics in the 1920’s. This Black satin gown with sheer crystal neckline and detail is so elegant! And the slit in the leg… just a taste of the scandalous side of the 1920’s. $268 Jovani is another premium designer with similar gowns.

For even more Great Gatsby scandal, show off more skin! The open back on the dress is a signature style of 1920s fashion. Since cleavage was too daring in the 20’s designers revealed open backs to tempt and tease from behind.  I love the side cutouts on the Jasz Couture dress to. For an extra bit of 20’s flair wear you long necklace draped backwards (around the front neck and hanging down your open back.) $338

Think all 20’s dresses were skin flaunting and flashy? Think again. Most 1920’s formal gowns were long, elegant, and simple. Long sleeves were popular on evening dresses as well as shorter “flutter” sleeves in the late 1920’s. This adorable Dusty Rose dress has flutter sleeves and a natural (not drop) waist which is more flattering on fuller body types. It looks like it could walk off the set of the Titanic movie too. $128 up to 4XL.

For the budget shopper, sacrificing 1920’s style in not an option. Luckily it doesn’t have to be. Typically longer gowns with more bling on them will be more expensive. Shorter dresses or long gowns with only small clusters of sparkle like this gold gown can be found for less than $100.  You can always add more spake to a dress with your jewelry. My own prom gown was similar to this one and I added rhinestones to the waist and strap for more “wow”.   This Shimmering taffeta gown comes in several colors and sizes up to 6XL for only $66!

These gowns are truly lovely and while I’m a tad old to be thinking of going to a prom I do enjoy going to a 1920’s speakeasy night called the Candlelight Club with my sister and these dresses are such inspiration for that! Rowena x
